Methow Valley School District Board of Director, Frank Kline added, “This just makes good economic sense. I also want to thank everyone that banks with us in the Methow Valley, as it is those deposits with North Cascades Bank that allows us to be a part of projects like this in our local communities, and that is what community banking is all about.” Being married to a teacher and having served on a school board, I understand the importance of being a good steward of taxpayer funding and the value of working with a local bank. This sentiment was echoed by the bank’s President and CEO, Charlie Guildner, who commented, “I am pleased that we were able to support the Methow Valley School District. This refunding is a great way for us to support a local school district and generate a savings for taxpayers.” As such, it is a pleasure to be working with the Methow Valley School District again. When asked to provide comment, North Cascades Vice President, Jim Tinker was quick to state, “As a municipal lender at North Cascades Bank, my job is to find opportunities to reinvest local dollars back into our local communities. When applied to the remaining amount of $1,290,000 in principal debt, using the same maturity date of, the district’s actions are estimated to result in a net savings of approximately $132,000 for the taxpaying citizens of Methow Valley. Pending final approval by the Methow Valley School District Board of Directors, the district will refinance its current interest rate of 5.00% down to 2.42%. The proceeds from the 2009 bond were used to replace the Liberty Jr-Sr High School roof. With these goals in mind, the Methow Valley School District recently partnered with Piper Jaffray and North Cascades Bank to initiate the refunding (refinancing) of existing debt in the form of the 2009 bond. Further, as a steward of the taxpayer’s dollars, the school district continuously pursues opportunities to minimize the economic impact upon the citizens of the Methow Valley. In an effort to achieve this aspirational vision, the Methow Valley School District works within its Budget Development Process to strategically invest its limited resources and maximize all federal, state, and local revenue sources. Working in partnership with parents and community members, the Methow Valley School District develops curious, creative, compassionate, competent, action-oriented citizens who graduate prepared to purse the widest range of college, career, and life opportunities possible. Jon Robinson: How about for younger gamers who maybe never played the classic games, why should they be interested in "Throwback?" You want to run that stuff up, you can in this game for sure. I can do laps around the field without being tackled. Mike Fahrny: The good old standard of being able to dodge and run. Jon Robinson: Speaking of exploits, what's your favorite "Tecmo Super Bowl" trick that is coming back in "Throwback?" We wanted to keep things competitive, so stats are locked. We got a lot of complaints about people being able to max out the stats, and because we added an online component to this version, we didn't want people to be able to go in and max out all their stats and just kind of run all over people, especially if they're playing against someone who maybe isn't as familiar with the franchise and all of those old exploits that we all love. We thought about that a lot, and I think "Kickoff" is the reason why we didn't end up changing this time around. Jon Robinson: Will people be able to edit player ratings as well, or are those locked? Jon Robinson: So my old Detroit running back is still going to be there? All of the original stats are there, so your favorite players are in there, and we kept the teams in the same city location, so you should be able to find and figure out where your old favorites are pretty quickly. It just depends how much you want to go back and micromanage. So if you want to go back and play as one of those old NFL teams, feel free to. But the one thing we did do is to allow all the team and player names to be editable by the player. All the team and player names are different. Mike Fahrny: Because of the NFL licensing with EA, we couldn't use any of the teams or players, so they're all different. Jon Robinson: Without the NFL license, how are the team and player names handled in the game? While the game doesn't feature the NFL license, all team names and player names are fully customizable, so it won't be long until you're playing as your favorite stars. Mike Fahrny: The new game actually uses code from the SNES version, the 1991 version of the game, and we actually looked at "Throwback" side by side with the SNES version throughout the entire development process just to make sure we were giving fans that original experience that everybody has been asking for along with some new updates like 3D graphics. Jon Robinson: I still know people who bust out their Super Nintendo to play the game. It's probably the most challenging title I've ever worked on as a producer. And one of the unfortunate side effects of that is one of the reasons why we haven't truly seen a next-generation version of "Tecmo Bowl." I don't know if management is scared to take a risk on it or what, but it's definitely been a hard game to work on. This is just one of those games that everyone seems to love, so any little change to it and either people are going to love it or they are going to absolutely hate it. "Tecmo Bowl Kickoff," which came out for the DS, was hopefully a good start to that, and we'll take it to the next level with "Throwback." We're not trying to do a full-on sim experience like you would get with "Madden," we're really just trying to stay true to the original more than we have in the past so we don't get too much fan hate like we do tend to get. Mike Fahrny: I think ever since the PS2 version, which didn't really do that well, people were begging Tecmo for an updated version of the old game. Jon Robinson: There are so many passionate "Tecmo Bowl" fans out there, why did it take Tecmo so long to get back in the business of making football games? I caught up with "Throwback's" producer, Mike Fahrny, to get all the dirt on the new/old game. The only difference is, Tecmo no longer has the NFL license, so in "Throwback," the Detroit team still has an all-time great at running back, it's just up to you to go in and edit his name. And when I say those old days are about to return, I'm talking about the classic game right down to the historic rosters and playbooks from the good old days of Super Nintendo football. When I think back to the classic days of "Tecmo Bowl" and "Tecmo Super Bowl," those are the images that flash instantly to mind.Īnd those days are about to return big time as Tecmo is set to release "Tecmo Bowl Throwback," a new downloadable version of their classic series on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network this spring. The Grasshopper is a classic drink recipe featuring creme de menthe, creme de cacao and light cream. The only difference is texture.Sweet, rich, and perfectly minty, the grasshopper cocktail was made for mint chocolate lovers. It will taste great no matter what type of cream you use. In a cocktail shaker half full of ice cubes, combine cream, creme de menthe, and creme de cacao. If you’re in the UK, “single cream” is the best call.īut the point is that it doesn’t really matter. In the US, you could also use “light whipping cream”. This recipe has been around since about 1919 when it was first served at New Orlean's historic Tujague's Restaurant. It tastes as good as a milkshake but it's not a modern martini. Those are great to keep on hand at the bar because they don’t need to be refrigerated, but they are real half and half. Naturally, like other insects that eat vegetables, grasshoppers get the water they need from the plants they eat. If you prefer what we in the US call light cream, the simplest substitute is half and half, and you can buy it in the form of tubs of Land o’ Lakes Mini Moos from Amazon. The cocktail, in case you have forgotten, is made with one-third white cacao, one-third green creme de menthe and one-third light cream in a quick shake with. Do grasshoppers drink water No, they do not drink water like we do. Heavy cream, which is equivalent to “double cream” in some regions, will make your Grasshopper drink thicker, creamier and richer. The Grasshoppers heyday came decades later during the 1970s and 1980s so its not surprising that some illustrious bartender thought to add vodka to create the rather better Flying Grasshopper cocktail. The truth is, you can use whichever type of cream you prefer. The proportions of the ingredients can be adjusted to suit your personal taste. These ingredients are combined in an ice-filled cocktail shaker, given a few shakes, and then strained into a glass. But other variations call for heavy cream. Thin Mint Grasshopper Cocktail Ingredients: 1 oz creme de menthe 1 oz creme de cacao 1 oz heavy cream Hersheys chocolate syrup, to drizzle Whipped Topping. The Grasshopper is a classic cocktail that is traditionally made with equal parts crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and cream. The standard recipe just calls for cream without being more specific. The Grasshopper drink recipe calls for “light cream”. This recipe uses only three ingredients and makes a wonderful cocktail 4. It’s smooth, infinitely drinkable, fairly weak and not at all pretentious.Īnd now we have to talk about dairy equivalencies from region to region. Grasshopper Cocktail A classic green cocktail recipe with chocolate and mint flavors. That gives it a different texture, and makes both the chocolate and mint more mellow in flavor. That takes the edge off the mint flavor so it’s not so intense. What makes the Grasshopper unique is that it has a creamy component you don’t find in every creme de menthe cocktail. When Beatrix was one year old, in 1939, her first sister, Princess Irene, was born. Beatrix' five godparents are King Leopold III of Belgium, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, Princess Elisabeth zu Erbach-Schönberg, Duke Adolf Friedrich of Mecklenburg, and Countess Allene de Kotzebue. She is the eldest daughter of Crown Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld. Princess Beatrix was born as Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard, Princess of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau and Princess of Lippe-Biesterfeld on January 31, 1938, at the Soestdijk Palace in Baarn, Netherlands. On Koninginnedag ( Queen's Day), April 30, 2013, Beatrix abdicated in favor of her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, who became the first King of the Netherlands in 123 years, and she resumed the title of princess. Privilege of birth and of wealth has not blinded the Queens of the Netherlands to concern for the welfare of other people, of other nations or for the peace and stability of the world. "Solidarity," Beatrix said, "is the universally accepted basis of co-existence." She stressed personal responsibility, respect for others including other faiths and cultures so that, through dialogue, balanced solutions can be found to solve the problems that confront the world. The three women steered the nation through loss of its empire, the third largest in the world at the end of the nineteenth century, through the Great Depression, World War I, and World War II and helped to shape the direction that Holland has taken since the end of the last world war as it helped pioneer the European Union to secure peace and has contributed generously to the peace-making missions of the United Nations and to the development of the Third World.īeatrix, who has a degree in law, championed the ideals of democracy and freedom around the world, receiving the gratitude of Nelson Mandela for her nation's role in isolating the white minority regime. Beatrix has continued to give the Netherlands moral leadership, building on the legacy of her mother and grandmother. Beatrix, however, unlike her two predecessors, has given birth to a male heir, Willem-Alexander. The Netherlands had female heads of state or an acting head of state from the end of the nineteenth century through until the start of the twenty-first, beginning with Emma and ending with Beatrix. Wilhelmina's mother, Queen Emma, had acted as regent during her childhood so Beatrix followed in the footsteps of four remarkable women. Her mother abdicated on April 30, 1980, as her mother, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands had abdicated in Juliana's favor. Upon her mother's accession in 1948, she became heir presumptive. She is the eldest daughter of Queen Juliana and her husband, Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld. Beatrix (Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard) (Janu) reigned as Queen of the Netherlands from 1980 until her abdication in 2013, after a reign of exactly 33 years. "This is simple English," said Clive Neal, a lunar authority at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Returning humans to the moon is a key part of NASA's vision for sending astronauts on to Mars in the 2030s. The rule is similar for 'the Sun' when referring to the prominent star in our sky to distinguish it from billions of suns in the universe." It is listed in the style sheet of the American Geophysical Union for submitted manuscripts. "The name in English for the principal satellite of Earth is 'the Moon.' This is the term used in professional papers and is so designated by the manual of the United States Government Printing Office, Section 3.31. Mendell, among others, has been cognizant of a firestorm of letters from planetary scientists that appeared in email threads on this issue.įor nonscientific individuals, Mendell said, "moon" is a noun referring to a unique object venerated for its romantic connotations.īut "for a planetary scientist, it can be any one of hundreds of moons in the solar system, each one of which has a name," Mendell said. Retired NASA lunar expert Wendell Mendell, a planetary scientist with a doctorate in the field and 50 years of experience with the space agency, weighed in on the debate as well. It will one day become a second home for humanity." Firestorm of letters It has the material and energy resources needed to help us bootstrap a true spacefaring capability. Our Moon is a world with its own history, one intimately entwined with our own. "When referring to any moon, such as in 'the moons of Jupiter,' it becomes a generic descriptor and hence, should not be capitalized. "When referring to 'the Moon' - that is, our Moon, Luna, site of Neil Armstrong's landing in 1969 - the word should be capitalized," he wrote. Simply put, Spudis said, the AP Stylebook is wrong. NASA, which sent a dozen astronauts to the lunar surface from 1969 to 1972, capitalizes the name of Earth's moon. "My guess is that some classically educated nitpicker who was forced to sit through endless hours on the joys of the ablative absolute in Latin class decided that the Roman-named objects of the universe were worthy of linguistic worship but the vulgar, barbarian Germanic names given to those other three bodies did not deserve to be capitalized." "Interestingly, the AP Stylebook says to capitalize the Earth but not the Sun and Moon," Spudis wrote. Spudis was a senior staff scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. That is the question, wrote lunar expert Paul Spudis in a 2009 article for Air & Space magazine. Related: Solar system facts: A guide to things orbiting our sun Nitpicker Do use 'the' in front of 'Sun' and 'Moon' as applicable." Do not capitalize 'solar system' and 'universe.' Another note on usage: 'Earth,' when used as the name of the planet, is not preceded by 'the' you would not say 'the Neptune' or 'the Venus.' When 'earth' is lowercased, it refers to soil or the ground, not the planet as a whole. Capitalize 'Sun' when referring to our Sun but not to other suns. Capitalize 'Moon' when referring to Earth's Moon otherwise, lowercase 'moon' (e.g., 'The Moon orbits Earth,' 'Jupiter's moons'). "Capitalize the names of planets (e.g., 'Earth,' 'Mars,' 'Jupiter'). A school was built in 1864 out of adobe and also served as the LDS Meetinghouse for the South Jordan Branch. The Branch consisted of just nine families. In 1863, the South Jordan LDS Branch was organized as a branch of the West Jordan Ward, giving South Jordan its name. Beckstead and others created the 2.5-mile (4.0 km) "Beckstead Ditch", which is still in use for irrigation of city parks and Mulligan's golf course. The flood plain of the Jordan was level, and could be cleared for farming if a ditch was constructed to divert river water along the base of the west bluff. In 1859, Beckstead became the first settler of South Jordan by moving his family along the Jordan River where they lived in a dugout cut into the west bluffs above the river. He helped dig the first ditch to divert water from the Jordan River, powering Archibald Gardner's flour mill. Alexander Beckstead, a blacksmith from Ontario, Canada, moved his family to the West Jordan area in 1849, and became the first of his trade in the south Salt Lake Valley. On July 22, 1847, an advanced party of the first Mormon pioneers entered the valley and immediately began to irrigate land and explore the area with a view to establishing new settlements. Looking west at a sunset over the Oquirrh Mountains, November 2009 Provost escaped, but his men were caught off-guard and fifteen of them were killed. The people responsible for the attack were planning revenge against Provost's party for an earlier unexplained incident involving other trappers. In October 1824, Provost's party was lured into an Indian camp somewhere along the Jordan River north of Utah Lake. The only recorded trapper to lead a party through the area was Étienne Provost, a French Canadian. When European settlers arrived, there were no permanent Native American settlements in the Salt Lake Valley, but the area bordered several tribes – the territory of the Northwestern Shoshone to the north, the Timpanogots band of the Utes to the south in Utah Valley, and the Goshutes to the west in Tooele Valley. Changes in climatic conditions to a cooler, drier period and the movement into the area of ancestors of the Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone, led to the disappearance of the Fremont people. to around 1350 A.D., the Fremont people settled into villages and farmed corn and squash.
